Let me take you on a walk through everything.
You are the energy fossilized in a pinprick at the beginning of creation. It cools and you begin to spin, the first iota bouncing around as time starts to flow around you.
Now you are hydrogen, two distinct, infinitesimal flecks bound to each other in a neverending dance.
You are the universe bending around itself to draw all the other yous to you.
Now you are a blinding ball of fire, and you are the dust that collects around this fire.
You are a cloud of gas collapsing somewhere and you are a ball of that gas which ignites, spinning your children into being. You are the third rock dancing around this orb.
You are the first confused hydrocarbons in this hellish world of acid and fire. You split apart and now you are the first to become two.
You accumulate and twist and grow and change as the millennia whirl by. You close yourself off from the world forever.
You grow and feed and grow and feed and grow and feed and now you are systems within systems. You are the first fish and you are the first lizard to crawl out of the ocean. You bring the ocean with you and you keep it inside you.
You discover strength from inside and make yourself warm to keep going.
You are the first to give birth to young. You are pregnant with the future.
You are the first Homo sapiens, huddling in a cave through the freezing night. You are its mate and you are its young. You are the paintings they draw on the walls of the cave.
You venture out as the ice shrinks, walking the savannah for millennia.
You are the first to pick up a rock and beat one of your own kind to death with it.
Now you are we.
We encounter Prometheus and his gift serves us well.
We live in abundance and plenty, wanting for nothing. We learn to bend Nature itself to our will, shaping the Earth and life around us as we see fit. In our hands, reeds become baskets and hides become clothing.
We conquer the fertile plains of the Tigris and the Euphrates. We work the earth from which we came so it can hold that which is precious to us. We bargain with physics itself to make the wheel.
Then we kill. And we kill. And we kill.
We invent debt and cruelty and then exercise them on each other. We are the earliest medicine women and we are the earliest barbarians. Trap and enslave, heal and rejuvenate. We are the hands that built the printing press, and those that invented gunpowder.
We are a world at the brink of snuffing itself out by its own growth.
We are Haber inventing his process. We unlimit the life of our own. We have held the future in our hands. We scythe down the life we create. We have dashed it to the ground.
We no longer need a Prometheus to steal fire for us. We are the fire that stokes itself. We are our own worst enemies.
We are the rich old men that rape and kill children in their dark rooms and we are the poor who take to the streets to protest them.
Now we are here. We fight and bicker amongst ourselves instead of doing what must be done.
We are the universe experiencing itself.
We must choose.
